Women’s tournaments and titles are entirely optional and most women chess players also play open events as well. The reason these exist is to provide a space for women to play without having to deal with sexism/prejudice. Whether you agree that women’s tournaments should exist is irrelevant. Many women feel the need for these and so they shall stay.
The real issue here is that a number of high rated chess players are currently being exposed for sexually harassing and assaulting women and instead of the international chess federation (FIDE) doing anything about it, they choose to go after trans women. Why? because FIDE are an outright awful organisation who have a stranglehold over the chess world. They are heavily intwined with Russian politics (Russia is also targeting trans people currently) and have a long history of being at odds with the chess community. Chess players aren’t happy about this decision and some national chess federations (Germany, France) have chosen to speak out against this and ignore FIDE.
